So we just got back from visiting/interviewing in the area. I would be working at a plant in Geismar, and my wife would likely work at one of the hospitals around BR. Any thoughts on the area around there? We have a couple of beagles that will need room to roam, so we'd like a little more than the standard 1/4 acre lot in the area.

This will/would require relo through the company, and leave us homeless until we sell our current home in Florida. Any advise on where we should look to possibly rent a house for a short period. After 4 months, if we have not sold our house, the company will purchase it, at which time we'd obviously like to get a permanent residence. Thanks for the info.

If you're working in Geismar, yes, I'd consider Ascension Parish. And in that situation, I'd try to stay near a corridor of I-10 on side and Airline Hwy (US 61) on the other side. If you go too far east of Airline, you have flooding issues. Too far west of I-10 (esp near the Miss River) you're near industrial plants/slummy houses. So given that, Prairieville, Dutchtown, Gonzales, and parts of Geismar would be your best bet. Oh, and I would not be very keen on Old Perkins Road near the Ascension/EBR line because (1) the traffic on that street is clogged with people trying to get to the I-10 at Highland exit, and (b) too close to Bayou Manchac and there is flooding potential dependintg on the subdivision.

Appreciate it. We'll keep that in mind when we get over that way. Another question...a couple folks at the plant mentioned that they'd avoid Gonzales. Any reason why they'd say this?

I honestly don't know. I don't recall that Gonzales was that bad - or let me put it this way, the bad areas in Ascension Parish are near the river/on the West Bank. While there may be a less desirable street or two in Gonzales, there's nothing that immediately comes to mind. But that can easily be solved by driving through the area if you want to check out an apartment and/or house there.

They are probably going off of old assumptions. Lived in Gonzales, and they have really done alot with the place in the past 6 years. It is very close to Geismar, and they have a few neghborhoods right up the road from I-10. Also...go eat at the Cabin Restaurant on Burnside....so good, wish I could have them send me food to Texas.

A lot really depends on your own preferences.

There are a host of attractive properties in various parts of the Parish that could give you the larger lot that you want, and in a modern home in a quasi rural setting. I disagree with the notion of living between Airline and I-10 (although there is a lot of building activity there), but if you can afford it there are lots of beautiful $350K + houses in the very areas BRMan suggests you avoid.
