Hello. I'll be relocating shortly to Baton Rouge to attend law school and was wondering if the experts here would give me an opinion on the best/worst places to live nearby.

I plan to buy a condo/townhouse/small house and was wondering what neighborhoods were best for a boring 40 year old mom (not interested in clubs or shopping malls, etc) that's really a small town girl. My daughter is in her last year of college so the quality of surrounding secondary schools is not an issue for me. I'd just like to reside in a safe neighborhood, somewhat close to the law school or to the VA clinic where I will likely transfer my job to.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Southern is in a bad neighborhood so you should probably look to the northern suburbs like Zachary or maybe Central.

There's one complex right outside campus on Scenic Hwy. It might be the Palisades, I've seen advertisements online every now and then and I've passed by it on occasion. They do look nice, but I don't know anything else about it. It is gated, but you know how that goes. Gated means nothing anymore. After that, if I wasn't considering on-campus housing, then I'd say you might want to check Zachary. I don't trust much in Baker anymore.

I'm sorry, I was thinking college student living. If you're looking to buy a small house or something and want a better small town feel, then yes, I'd go on to Zachary. Other options are Central (which is further and a little more difficult drive to Southern) and St. Francisville (which is a straight shot to Southern although they're working on the road to widen it up to the north).
