I have lived here for 5 years and my daughter attends privaTE school. We are still kinda able to afford it, but which public schools are the "best" in Baton Rouge? Elementary is what we are most interested in right now. Thanks!

My wife teaches in EBR.. Some has PE every day, but not all. Same is true for other activities (music, library, art, Spanish..) Have you considered for a magnet school?

Yes, but I like the location of Woodlawn and Shenendoah the best. I thought about the Performing Arts School, but don't know where to start! I juat want a great education for our child and hope that if we have to leave private due to cost, then how do the public schools in this area do when it comes to the education? I keep hearing how bad the schools are here, but don't know why-is it class size, dicipline, lack of respect and good teachers??

Default Great education

Please, check out classical conversations.com. It's homeschooling, but with a team of parents and tutors. We use the classics and the Trivium. The classics were used by Benjamain Franklin and his Generation, and were continued till about a hundred years ago. The Trivium is best summed up in Dorothy Sayer's "The Lost Tools of Learning". Another book I think you'll enjoy is "The Well-trained Mind" By Susan and Jessie Wise.

Baton Rouge Public Elementary School Rankings:

Name - Performance Score - Star Rating:

Westdale Heights Academic Magnet - 147.2 - 5 star
Forest Heights Academy of Excellence - 134.8 - 4 star
Baton Rouge Visual and Performing Arts Center - 132.1 - 4 star
South Boulevard Foreign Language Magnet School - 128.8 - 4 star

Note, those four schools outstrip anything in Ascension, Livingston, West Feliciana, West Baton Rouge, and Zachary by a huge margin.

Also decent in EBR Public schools:

Parkview Elementary School - 119.1 - 3 star
Shenandoah Elementary School - 115.5 - 3 star

These also outperform all of the suburban schools, save those in Zachary.

To consider for Gifted education (please note, these scores are averaged with those of the neighborhood students, so the scores seem low)

Buchanan Elementary School - 103.1 - 3 star

Coming from personal experience, Shenandoah Elementary would not be a good move if your kid is used to private school. My children went there for a year about four/five years ago and while it was a good culture lesson, they learned close to nothing academically. Magnet school is my recommendation.
