I would like to thank everyone for the tips too. I'm leaving for a weeklong family vacation to Bend/Sunriver next week. Smith Rock looks insane.

It's truly an amazing State park.

Are you a rock climber by chance? If so, you'll be in heaven. Not many places in the country (the world for that matter) can rival Smith Rock.

All I can say is Bend is awesome. I just got back from a week up there and in the Sunriver area and both are phenominal. Went out to Smith Rock, gorgeous, did some whitewater rafting down the Deschutes River, awesome, went to downtown Bend and the Mill District, just had a really great time there. I could easily call Bend home. Thanks for the suggestions of what to see. Crater Lake on the way home was unreal too!!

Glad you enjoyed it! I just had a friend in from NYC and she was pretty blown away, too. She's a Manhattan foodie and was pleasantly surprised by our restaurants....at least the ones in the $8-$14 range. (I've yet to be impressed by any of our "fine dinning" options, aside from the good steak, etc. - but, hey, maybe that ain't what this towns about)

Where in the Sierra foothills are you located? How would you compare the two areas?

I'm close to Placerville and find the 2 areas to be very similar, with the exception that Bend has an incredible downtown area and the newly renovated Old Mill District is vibrant and planned very well. I found great food in Bend/Sunriver. And my wife and I are considered "foodies" ourselves! It seems that the economy hasn't really hit Bend, whereas here in California, every square inch of the state has been hit. And I'll tell you what I loved most about Bend, no pretentious people there. Down to earth, happy, friendly people who use their blinkers and drive the speed limit. I'll be looking for land up there in the next few years!
