That is beautiful. I have only seen rime ice in pictures.

Is that something that happens most winters in Bend or is it unusual there?

Hoar Frost and Rime Ice: What’s the Difference?

Snowhut, rime formations are not unusual. Just takes freezing fog and some wind. Not an uncommon combo around here.

As the last line in that article states, "Whatever you call it, it's pretty."

I've always heard it referred to as hoarfrost. But glad you made a point to only comment on that part of my post.

As a teacher surely you support using the correct term for those formations?

Your photos speak for themselves. Beautiful as always.

Perhaps, but I do think it's safe to say it's very difficult to tell the difference. I am also cranky. That's what a 6 month back injury will do for you!

However, I do think we could also call what we've had in Bend hoarfrost. I don't know that we can "technically" rule it out. We probably had a mix of both here in Bend, with rime especially prevalent at Mt. Bachelor.

Guide to Frost

I'm not here to argue, really. I just felt your post was a little condescending and rubbed me the wrong way.

There are two ways to identify them.

Hoarfrost is an ice crystal growth that will be all around a branch - all sides will be covered. Rime is tiny deposits of ice that are blown onto the windy side of a surface. If the frost lacks the beautiful geometric complexity of crystals and only grows on one side of a branch then it is rime.

Having moved here from a place with low humidity (teens), I'm not used to seeing frost so often. Took this shot a couple days ago.
