Eating Well Around Bend, Oregon

Quote:
Given its attraction as a place where most visitors spend more time outdoors than in, canoeing down the Deschutes River, climbing Pilot Butte, biking all over the region or just sitting around (legally) smoking dope, Bend is a city where you expect to find taverns, pizzerias, gastropubs, Mexican-American eateries and Thai storefronts, and you will. But you can also dine extremely well in this out-of-the-way Oregon city within the Cascade Mountain Range.
Bend, Oregon, Stays the Way It Was Despite Transplant Influx--at Least So Far

Quote:
It’s tough to tell the billionaires from the millionaires in Bend because they dress like everyone else—a de rigueur uniform for both men and women that focuses on gray or brown Patagonia t-shirts, Orvis cargo pants, Big Lebowski sweaters and Puma baseball caps, often worn backwards, set with Oakley sunglasses above the peak. In all seasons some wear wool beanies over their ears.

It remains to be seen if the current boom in Bend real estate can be restrained enough to keep this beautiful small-ish city of 90,000 people as the kind of place people retire to and that over-taxed, smog-poisoned Californians move to get away from. Bend is the kind of town where a gigantic fir tree grows through the roof of the Pine Tavern, where the outdoor food market has a tent that sells only kabocha products and where “awesome” is the most common adjective used.

Slow Lane: Float and Paddle Down the Deschutes River in Bend, Oregon | Seattle Magazine

Quote:
Seattleites flock to Bend, Oregon, each year for many reasons: the reliable sunshine, the river rafting, the hiking, the fishing, the golfing—and yes, the lazy river float.

The Deschutes River flows through this central Oregon town like a super-chill water-park ride. Every summer, throngs of people (and even their pups) float along this real-life lazy river on inner tubes, in kayaks and on stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) for 1.5 relaxing miles. It’s one of Bend’s best features, and the city makes it easy for everyone to get their feet wet.

Central Oregon’s new tourism chief sees room for growth

Quote:
Q: Where do you see growth potential in Central Oregon tourism?

A: It’s a question of summer versus winter and putting more effort in winter. That’s where there’s room for growth there. I’m sure the hotels and restaurants would support that. If you look at the year across the board, there’s a lot of room for growth, and winter is the place to expand. There are four different distinct seasons. I think they all have opportunity to be marketed. Looking at the year as a whole, you can be strategic on where you’re using those marketing dollars and some of those efforts. Overall, there’s room for growth in the region.

Because the road up to Bachelor isn't already jammed with enough heavy traffic on weekends in Winter?

Because the sno-parks parking lots aren't already full, especially the one groomed area, Meissner?

Or maybe so they can start charging an extra fee on top of the sno-park pass to try to win the lottery to actually be able to use your pass....like they are doing with the overcrowded hiking trails in the summer?

They need to fire the Tourism Chief, use the tourism funds to patch the road ripped up by all the extra tourist traffic, and coast for awhile until Bend can actually sustain the level of tourists it already gets.

And its not just them. Visit Bend is also marketing Bend as a tourist destination outside of the popular summer period.

Visit Bend CEO Kevney Dugan told council the focus has shifted from promoting Bend as a summer destination, to marketing geared to bring tourists during the off peak, or shoulder season. Today, Visit Bend spends 90 percent of their marketing funds towards off-season promotions.
Their budget is pretty big too!

Up from $3.10 million in 2018, Visit Bend’s 2019 budget is aiming for a modest increase to $3.17 million
