Hello,

First time poster, long time lurker on this great forum...

My wife and I and our two young kids were in Bend for house/lot hunting last week and checked out Saddleback near the end of our visit. It seemed appealing to us but we didn't have time to chat up any neighbors to get a sense of the community.

Anyone familiar with the Saddleback West neighborhood and can share your impressions? Mainly we'd like to get a sense of the community feel and whether this would be a good neighborhood for kids.

We didn't see any neighborhood parks or kids playing and are wondering if maybe people mostly stay to themselves in this older neighborhood, especially given the large lot sizes.

Many thanks!

Must be a older neighborhood but I have never heard of it.

I'm just guessing, but because Saddleback is out of the way and nobody just drives through there on their way to anything else, not many people are familiar with it.

I've only been in there once. It looked nice. The houses are attractive, the lots are large, and everything is quiet. I spend a lot of time in Tumalo, but at the ranches, not the residential areas.

As a generalization, you don't see kids playing in the streets very often in the Bend area. There are kids, and they play, but they are in backyards, not out on the street. You might see a group of them briefly as they move from one house to another. Or you see them at the parks with a parent supervising.

OP, I suggest that you take the address that you are looking at and call the non-emergency number at the sheriff's department and ask what sort of calls they get to that area. I would expect it to be very minimal, just by looking at the area, but if you have kids, that is something you should check before you buy.

Also, I recommended going to the area after 5 PM and just sitting in your car to see what happens after business hours.

Bend has neighborhoods with roaming bands of kids having way too much fun all summer. Saddleback strikes me as more quiet. Nice neighborhood though.

Thanks all, I appreciate the feedback.

Since my original posting, my wife and I decided to look for a place closer to town after doing some "what's near here" searches and finding nothing at all (groceries, restaurants, coffee) within 15 minutes of Saddleback. Currently, we're considering building a house in the Rimrock neighborhood off Archie Briggs using a local green builder.
