I took this shot today from about 300' above NW Redmond, look SW. Not much point in putting kitekam up again until the fires are out and/or the smoke clears.

I was up shooting the race yesterday near Sparks Lake and it was even smokey up there. It just sucks right now.

I don't think that is the asthma trigger they were worried about. I am pretty sure they are wanting to know about wood heating fires in town, but you did bring up an interesting point. Smoke is often year around in Bend. Or it can be depending on the fire season.

Just a follow up to this post, this morning (10/05) we went for a walk and as the weather's been getting cooler, a lot more people are heating their homes at night. The air was visibly hazy and I found the smell of wood smoke to be extremely strong, as if I was standing next to a campfire. This is my first fall in Bend, so this may be normal, but as a newbie, I found it to be really disturbing and it did give me a headache. When I came home, all my clothes and my hair smelled like campfire.

I live in a pretty dense area of town, walking distance to Drake Park. So perhaps the air quality is better where the homes are newer, and where they don't use wood to heat their homes. Just something to consider if you have bad allergies!

The smoke you are smelling is actually from prescribed fires in the area and not from burning wood to heat homes. Thankfully, I don't feel as though the wood burning to heat homes ever gets this bad. It is very dense this morning. I was actually coming on here to report about the prescribed fires in the fall thread.

Heh, yeah. I don't know if I've ever noticed home wood fire burning smoke smells. I was woken up by the prescribed burn today. Seems a little intense......not a fan and out of the ordinary in my fall experiences in Bend (the smoke, not the burns).

Hopefully as the day warms up the winds will shift from South to North and the smoke will disperse.

glad to hear the haze is not normal for a Bend fall - I was wondering how people lived all winter with it!
