Hi, I'm a 30 year old, female doctor thinking of moving to Bend. Is there much of a single professional scene, or is it more blue collar or already married types?

Default Bend is a yuppie theme park

Bend is northern Palm Springs, Oregon. It is Not a big city. It is becoming less diverse as time goes by (wealthier, whiter). If you consider yourself self-absorbed yuppie, you should fit in just fine. Great outdoors activities. Good luck

I wouldn't say Bend has a vibrant singles' scene of the type you appear to be looking for. There's a dollop of young ski bums, for lack of a better term. A LOT of retirees. The professional job drain causes a lot of local young professionals to move to Portland.

I'm not sure how the above poster can claim Bend is getting "whiter." How do you go from 100% to more than 100%?

Thanks for the replies. I'm a bit of a "yippie"--that is a yuppie (latte-drinking, nice-clothes wearing) mixed with a hippie (vegetarian, outdoor enthusiast). John, that's exactly the info I was looking for--thanks!

It might be that way but I find most people are retired or married. But the job market is great for doctors or anyone in health care, I can say this since I have been looking for a job and most are in health care.
But the area is great love the weather and outdoor recreation, I think it is the best in oregon.

I would think it would be an OK area for a young single professional. Lots to do socially means lots of opportunities to meet and interact and meet friends... It's a very "money" town with a lot of professionals.

Default Safe for cyclists?

Can someone in Bend please let me know if the area is safe for cyclists? My husband and I moved from Ashland to a suburb of Charlotte, NC last year, and we are very dismayed at the lack of safety for cyclists here (and DH is an avid cyclist). Considering a move to Bend in a few years, but will come check it out first (unf., never made it up while we lived in Ashland). TIA.

I think so. My wife & I have taken many a ride outside of town. many of the roads have wide shoulders (there may be a lot of pumice from sanding the winter roads, so it wouldn'y hurt to have fenders). Not a lot of traffic and we'd ride all over.

Thank you, DH will be happy to hear it. Cycling in Ashland was great and drivers much more cyclist-friendly, and I never worried (I myself do not ride). We sure miss that OR scenery over here in NC.
