I've applied for a few jobs in Bend. I've gotten to the review part on most and I have now been interviewed twice. One interview was in person, and one was over the phone. The in person interview wasn't the best, I was clearly well overqualified, and I could tell they were nervous about the out of state issue. The telephone interview was fantastic, one of the best I have ever had in my life. I got rejection letters from both. The second I made sure to note that I have housing already lined up and I can move there as soon as I get a job. I know there are plenty of applicants in Bend, but I also know there are plenty of people there that don't want your standard 8-5 job. Overall in my Bend job search I have had 4 jobs want to interview, I only interviewed with 2 because the others only wanted in person and I didn't have enough notice to take time off work to get there. I guess my questions is what gives? None of this makes any sense to me... and if it is the out of state issue, why bother interviewing me? The one rejection was so soon after the interview it made me think they already had a candidate and were just following procedure.

You want us to guess why an interviewer, whom we don't know, for a business that we don't know what it is, for a job that we have no idea what it is, and for you, where we don't have any idea how you are qualified, didn't choose you?

I'm going to guess that the interview didn't go as well and you thought it did. Without a lot more information, that is the best I can do.

My understanding is that there is a lot of competition for any decent job. Nearly everyone I know is more than willing to work an 8 - 5 job.

I have a friend here in Bend, a long time local, that has been searching for work for years. She's well qualified, actually often overqualified, but still hasn't found a job. Even now. Despite the population growth, Bend is still a tourist town. Not a lot of companies with good benefits, good salary and good hours are here so competition is fierce. There are a ton of jobs in the service industry, but that's about it right now. Bend has always been a tough place to find a decent job.

Why don't you call them or write them a letter and ask for some feedback? Maybe they will give it to you to help you improve on your next application/interview?

My wife landed a job after only 6 weeks of searching. The one she got was only her 6th or 7th app I think. Of course, she has talent and skill going for her in addition to beauty

But seriously, there could be 100 different potential explanations for why they didn't choose you. There's no telling. I've been on the hiring side enough times now to appreciate the luck factor. It's about 70-80% having the right resume & materials & about 20% luck, mostly regarding your competition or lack thereof.

I've hired a lot of people for technical jobs in television. Sometimes you feel something is just a little off and a couple times I ignored it to my later dismay. It may not be rational, just a chance remark that prejudices the interviewer, and they wouldn't admit it. I've done it a few times on the other side of the table too and never knew why I didn't get the job. A couple times it was a ringer - an internal applicant that the boss had already decided on and was going through the motions for HR. As they say, a successful job search usually looks like this: no, no, no, no, no, YES. I once spent nearly two years working on my No collection.

I had 3 jobs during my 3 years in Bend, 1 of them being part time. I had to move back to Georgia for financial reasons and it broke my heart to leave, now i'm in a better situation and I may be considering coming back, however I dont know if I'll be able to land a job as fast as I did before. Also with the long waiting list for every apartment there, finding a place to rent would be a bigger challenge.

it's cheaper to buy compared to how high rent has gone up that's for sure.
