I would love to hear your personal experiences with Tumalo Community School or with middle schools in the Bend area.

I have a daughter who will be in 5th grade next year and we are considering moving back to the Bend area. Tumalo Community School is appealing because the school is a K-8, although I don't like the idea of Redmond High School from 9-12.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I know this thread is old but I'm interested in this same topic. If anyone has information about Redmond schools or Tumalo Community School I'd love to hear it! Thanks!

The elementary school in Tumalo might very easily be the most desirable school in the state. The district is very small and they do not take transfers, so you must live inside the school district.

The students there do all sorts of community service projects and when I see them interviewed in TV, they are extremely bright and articulate.

It is a very wealthy district and people with money insist upon a proper education for their kids and make waves when it doesn't happen. The school doesn't get any more funding than any other school but the parental participation makes all the difference in the world. Parents make sure their kids are excelling, and your kid, by golly, had better keep up and not cause disruptions.

The down side is that the district goes to Redmond High School.

There are a few inexpensive houses in Laidlaw, but generally, Tumalo is one of the more expensive places to live in Central Oregon

I deleted a post because I didn't want to start the education wars up again here, but I'll just say that having motivated students who come from families who value education makes teachers' jobs a lot more rewarding. My son attended public junior high and high schools in a college town where the parents were highly educated themselves, and expected their kids to do well in school and go on to college, and it showed in the API scores and the way teachers clamored to teach in that district. Even the kids who weren't quite up to the task at least behaved well because they were surrounded by kids who were actually involved in school. Peer pressure CAN be a wonderful thing.

Carry on. Didn't mean to stray off the OPs topic too far...

Good info, just one minor correction. Tumalo is part of the Redmond school district. It's not actually it's own district. I have friends with kids at Tumalo Community School and they absolutely love it. I don't know much about the Redmond School District. I subbed a few times at the elementary and middle schools there and didn't have many problems with kids. I think some schools have lower test scores than others, but as far as Tumalo goes, it's great.
