Thanks for sharing the news story and video links. I was just visiting the big island last week, and would have loved to go see this. But it happened on the day I had to leave.

I was reading about 2500 to 3000 people a day are coming out to Kalapana to see the lava flows.

This is one of those times I really hate that C-D won't let us link to blogs. There is a blogger who lives near Kalapana who is posting some really great updates and photos about the lava movement. Google search Hawaiian Lava Daily and you should find him... quick before my post is edited!

I agree and that blogger/blogsite doesn't even have ads plastered all over it. (at least that I know of. I run firefox with adblocker add-in)

We were there yesterday. The house was still there, but the lava was creeping ever closer. The lava wasn't doing anything quickly dramatic. During the day there was smoke and the occasional small brush fire with a rare methane boom now and then. At night, we could see the lava tunnel glowing through a few cracks here and there with one area where the lava was oozing out into a lava puddle that hardened and darkened pretty quickly. If one knew that the big bulge of lava covering the road several hundred feet from the end of the viewing site was new last week and that much of the lava being seen was new last week, then it's much more dramatic. However, much of this is happening on the '89-'90 lava flow which looks a lot like fresh lava if you don't notice it isn't as shiny and there are a few small ferns growing on it.

It wasn't too busy during the day although there was always folks there. At night it got much more crowded. They close the parking area after ten, so between seven (more or less dusk/dark) and ten is when most of the folks come to view it, I think. The lava is running around on private property so the folks viewing it are kept to the roadway which is public property.

The security guards there said it changes every day and sometimes it does spectacular things and other times it doesn't so you just go see it when you can and see what it's doing at the time.
