That's the right black sand beach at Punalu'u, but the directions given are wrong. It is not in the Puna District south of Hilo, it is in the Ka'u District about midway between Kona and Hilo. It is about an hour and a half drive south from Kona town.

South from Kona through Ocean View, pass the turnoff to Southpoint. Just past that is the road makai to Black Sand Beach.

the Green Sand Beach is near it, but not the same beach. Punalu'u is black and a little further down the main road. Green Sands is basically at south point-you park close to the point and walk (or 4WD) to the beach. Punalulu you just drive right up to.

It's pretty far from South Point Road actually--you drive through Na'alehu, pass Widdington beach park, and are quite close to Pahala by the time you reach the turnoff.

How far is the walk? under 1/2 mile or so?

You drive about 12 miles from the highway down a road that gets worse and worse -- potholes, narrow, etc. When you get down near the end keep left and you'll come to a place to park your car. The walk from there is two miles one way. It is very, very hot and no facilities. The wind blowing very strong in your face makes it seem further. The reward when you get there is a fantastic place like nothing you've ever seen. Make sure you don't leave any valuables in your car.

To get to the black sand beach, stay on the highway for about another ten miles. There will be signs to Punalu'u. You can drive right up to the beach. There are restrooms and a small concession stand.
