All of the public charter schools are free - there is no tuition.
The state funds the charter schools - at about 1/2 the amount of money, per pupil as the state funds the regular schools. (nice and fair, huh?)
Each school holds a "lottery", usually in early Spring. Students that attended the prior year get 1st chance to stay - if there are open spots left, new students are allowed in based upon their lottery number.
I highly doubt that one could attend any of the charter schools this late in the game for the next school year, since you would have already missed the lottery. In other words, your number would be so high as to be meaningless.

Waikoloa School was built through community effort (lobbying, etc), and the construction was funded largely with developer money. The problem with getting a new school built is due to the "justification" of numbers (enrollment) needed by the DOE, and then being put onto the wait list. Waikoloa jumped that process by coming up with other funding. The Bacon Davis pay scale was not even an issue.

It is a regular State owned, DOE school, fully staffed and supported with tax dollars. It is a very nice campus, the buildings maybe 15 years old, and includes a large school yard. It recently expanded to include middle school classes. It is one of the best elementary schools on the island. (The middle school is still in a growth mode, and there are some newer "portable classrooms" due to increased enrollment.)

My son goes to Volcano School, it's free and we LOVE it. Couldn't be happier. Not sure what grade your son is in, but call them, the K is full for Fall, but they periodically have openings in the grades. it just takes a call. If you can get your son in then your 4 year old will have priority as a sibling, over others on the list, when they start K. I wouldn't go to MT. View school , and we live in Mt. View. We drive 20 minutes up and down. Look up the ratings on greatschools.org
