If you mean to lay out on the lanai to sleep all night, you may wish to buy a mosquito net canopy. An occasional mosquito X longer exposure = more bites. Also note there are two kinds of mosquitoes... those which are active during the day, and those that are active at night. The reason late afternoon is often the worst time of day for mosquito bites is that it's a crossover period when both types can be active.

I haven't used bug spray in the nearly 7 months I have been here; they just aren't that bad IMHO.

There is a for pay service for waste disposal. https://www.facebook.com/KauRubbishDisposalLLC
Otherwise, bring it to the transfer station on Saturdays or one of the other ones on your way into Kona.

I have gone through TONS of bug spray! I keep a bottle in the house, a bottle in the car, and a bottle in my purse. Every time I walk out the door, they attack any skin not covered with clothing. I think it has something to do with body chemistry because my husband hasn't had any mosquito bites.

This is not just in Discovery Harbour. We have been getting attacked at the hula studio in Ocean View, too, probably because there is heavy vegetation on the property.

Same thing happens with us. The mosquitos love my wife but apparently I taste bad.

Sorry, McFrosty, mosquitoes don't want people with good taste, they want people that taste good.

DOH, I am guessing this.
I live on one of the older flows where it mostly lava. As long as I keep standing water emptied I see very few mosquitos. I do get bit occasionally if I am working in the landscaping or gardening, but not much at all.
I may also be one of those deemed to be "less tasty" to mosquitos.
