I do the same with hardcore tailgaters. Slow down, pull to the side, wave them around.

If they flip me off, I just remind myself that it has nothing to do with me, and everything to do with them.

When I have a tailgater trying to almost push me into speeding, I keep at the speed limit anyway. I tell myself, "If I get a ticket for speeding, is that jerk going to come help me pay the fine"? Nope, and I don't let them get me into a ticket.

Man, maybe it's just a difference in personality, but even while I'm working or doing home health visits, nothing's that important that I have to speed down some of those roads. I'm firmly with mangodog and cybercity with this one - I pull over to the right a little, throw a shaka to let them know and usually they shaka as they go past me.

I don't think I've ever gotten the finger yet. Well, at least not for that

We do the best we can and try to convey conviviality while trying to avoid dah crash. Too much drugahs and alcohol on dah road.

For sure - I try to keep a good disposition, humble myself when necessary and throw shakas when I need to (passing in cars, crossing the street in front of a car in town). I've never run into any problems on the BI using this method. I also try to keep aware of my surroundings - helps to 'jump the gun' with lots of issues.

Good call mangodog.

It's kind of hard to tell from your post, but it sounds like there was an accident and someone was driving too fast. Can't blame the road for that. Could happen anywhere.

I drove from Volcano back to Kona at around 11PM at night through the south road last week and didn't think it was bad at all. The pavement is very nice and you guys have tons of reflectors unlike here in Colorado with 0 reflectors and usually not nice pavement.

Also don't have to worry about plowing into a moose, elk, etc..

I drive from Pahala to Kona at least 3 times per week, sometimes multiple times a day. Yes, I exceed the limit, but 35 Mph, seems a little too safe.
Anyone kind enough to pull over or move right so I can pass gets a Wave, Shaka, Thumbs-up from me, every time.

I also will put my own life at risk, but would never endanger someone else's. I don't tailgate anyone and if I notice there driving slowly because it's a curvey, unfamiliar road I back off until I get to one of the 4 legal places to pass. At which time the slow driver thinks there Mario Andretti and speed up. I got 3 speeding tickets on that road, all passing people legally and running into Hawaii's finest. Two of the 3 I had dismissed when I wrote a letter to the judge explaining the circumstances, the 3rd is still pending.

Everything we do has associated risk, it's how one manages that risk that is the difference between arriving at your destination in your car or in an ambulance or worse.
Impaired, tired, or making driving secondary to whatever else is going on in your life at the moment puts risk on everyone else on the road. I remember one lady driving and reading the newspaper at the same time when I passed her.

(steps off soapbox)

My 2 cents, DONT; drink eggnog, (gross) smoke blunts. DO; get some sleep, pay attention, and don't act like a 5yo.

Can't blame the road, lack of shoulder, or no lighting for being stupid.

Oh, and hats off to the road crew for taking 3 years to replace a bridge cuz it's one hell of a nice job !https://pics3.city-data.com/forum/im...ies/oglvvd.gif
