How soon do they release your pets from the airport if you have all the paperwork in order.

The vet we hired met the plane, walked us to a room where she gave both dogs a thorough going-over, then signed the release forms and sent us on our merry way. I did not time it, but I'd say it was between 5-10 minutes.

There are several vets listed on the Ag Dept site who can handle this for you but I have to say that I was incredibly pleased with the service I got from the one I hired, including helping us tremendously from afar months before we arrived. PM me if you want her contact info.

Edited to add that we flew into Kona and the vet is on that side.

If the animals go through HNL you don't need to hire a vet. The release only takes a few minutes (though it can take up to an hour for the animal to get from the airplane to the exam room). If the plane lands after 3:30, plan on the animal spending the night and getting released in the morning.

We did it twice. The first time we did it all on our own, the second time we hired an animal import service to help us. Hiring the service was actually cheaper overall because it saved us a trip to HNL and they had cheaper negotiated rates for the HNL-ITO flight.

Also, only dogs and cats can be released on neighboring islands. All other species (like birds) MUST go through the HNL AG station.

Has the island been like you expected it to be? What's the most astonishing thing you've noticed so far?

Sorry, I'm not clear. Does that mean your dog is out of quarantine?
