My wife and I will be moving to the Pahoa area this month. I like Mt. Biking and just trying to see about group rides and how often there ride. I hear The Bike Hub is a good place to have work or repairs done, what can you tell me and is it important to have special grease on all moving parts of the bike?
I hope to start riding after we get settled in.

The mountain biking I'm used to in Colorado was on dirt trails. You do realize that that trails in Hawaii are going to be mostly roots and rocks, those rocks being lava rocks. One road that you might find fun is off on the east flank of Mauna Kea off of the road to the visitor's center. Doesn't get a lot of traffic and is partially paved.

I did find a Big Island Mountain Bike Association by Googling "mountain biking trails big island".

I rode Kalopa State Park in January, I was told by the folks at Kona Bike Works that it was the trail with the most soil on the island. There is a place near Hilo where you need to get a permit, the permit is free and lasts a year. From what the folks at Kona Bikes Works said there are not a lot public places to ride and other than Kalopa, they are all tire eating lava rock.

I suggest you post your questions on MTBR forum for Hawaii.
