So, I was doing my homework cynthia sent me and was reading all about catchment systems (fascinating stuff, if you're ever bored). Anway, there were several mentions of R-A-T-Ss! Ugh! Would you tell me about the wild life there. We will probably be buying land (3 acres or so) and so imagine some wild life.

Great question, Mvn!

Wild pigs can be an issue in some places. You'll really want to check out your potential neighbor's perspective on whether or not pigs are to be protected or trapped...

Read this article for a classic case of neighbor vs neighbor:

Click here for the full article: Neighbors feuding over feral pigs on Big Island - The Honolulu Advertiser - Hawaii's Newspaper

"Big Island neighbors are feuding over feral pigs.

Sueo and Sharene Matsumoto say they love pigs and feed about 100 of them regularly on their 12-acre lot in a densely wooded subdivision south of Hilo. They've even named some of the regulars, like Bobo, Dante and Benedict.

But neighbor Paul Claes, who lives a few hundred feet up the gravel road in Fern Forest, hates the porkers. The pigs have torn up his garden, made wallows in his yard and chewed on his pipes for water...."

If you have a properly installed and sealed catchment system, along with filtration, you shouldn't have a problem. I've seen catchment systems on the Big Island that were nothing more than an above ground plastic lined swimming pool, I'm sure they had some sort of filtration. Employee of mine a few years back was ill for days after swimming in Seven Sacred Pools here on Maui, and getting a few mouthfulls of the water. Ecoli bacteria from the pig excrement coming from upstream made him very sick!!!!

Okay Jungjohann, let me get this straight, keep the dead rats/mice out of my water catchment and the cannibals will stay away? I will add that to my file. In the mean time, you are very encouraging regarding the catchment system. Mahalo. Sharlee

I love geckos. I got used to them when we lived on Oahu when I was a little girl. I am mostly worried about something floating in my water.

How big are the "rats?"
