My wife and I have been and lived on Maui, but we've never been to the big island.
We are going to stop in Hawaii for a month in transit to Australia.
We would like to have an extended vacation on the island, somewhere that is located near public transportation (this will be a backpacking trip) and close to a beach.

Any tips, or thoughts are greatly appreciated!

How much are you willing to spend? Are you looking for a hostel or a nice hotel?

Aloha,

When do you plan to come? The time of year has a lot of impact on weather you'll likely encounter, and hence back-packing recommendations.

Public transportation is very sparse on the Big Island, with few routes and few runs per day on those routes. They are fundamentally organized around getting people to work, and then home again. I figured out once that it would be possible to circumnavigate the whole island on the bus, but that it would take 3 calendar days due to the way sectional schedules do not mesh well.

All the routes and schedules can be found on their website: Select a Schedule... — Hele-On Bus

Oahu is your best bet for public transportation. The outer islands a rental car is a must.
