I did the Waipi'o Valley horseback ride a few years ago. It underwhelmed. It is a short ride, line ride through trails in a taro root farm. Scenic views of cliffs looking up, but nothing too interesting up close and far inland to see water. Basically a ride you could do anywhere.

This, however, was an amazing horseback ride: Paniolo Adventures Hawaii Horseback Riding. Gigantic Open range fields, huge panoramas, distant water views, and great mountain views. I seriously thought I was on a ranch in Wyoming until you see the distant ocean views. I am a total neophyte/cityslicker, but my wife is the rider in the family and loved it too.

Kahua Ranch and Paniolo Adventures are both up on Kohala mountain. To get down off the mountain and over to Waipio Valley will be about a forty five minute to an hour's drive. Dunno if that changes your plans any. Might be nicer to stay in the Kohala area, can you rent more horse time instead of driving time? One of the ranches used to have an outside around the campfire sort of dinner, I think. Maybe it was overnight camping, though, I've not paid much attention to it.

We loved our horseback riding trip down in Waipiʻo Valley. It is one of the most beautiful places we have ever been!

Thanks again!

We decided on Waipiʻo because it looked pretty in the pictures and it's a 2.5 hour ride (the other ride she can do is only 1 hour). Because of her age, we can only choose the 1 hour "city slicker" ride at the other placed linked to (I found that one too). I don't mind that we won't see the beach. Our hotel is on the beach and I have lots of scuba diving planned as well

Although the first ride we are on is only until noon and that one hour city slicker starts at 1:30. I wonder if that's enough time to get from Waipi'o to the ranch for the other horse tour (it's also the same place we are eating that night). Might be good to have more to do in that area since the hotel would appear to be a 2 hour drive away.
