Well I do have to agree with hotzcatz on this one a bit - lava once it destroys your home - the land is also destroyed and you can not rebuild or repair such as with a hurricane atleast not for years and years.

Sure you can pack boxes and/or sell your belongings prior but over all if your home/land is overrun with lava you are looking at a total loss.

Hurricanes/storms if the roadways get blocked they can be cleared so you can return back home if your road gets blocked with lava it is not easy or as fast to clear the road again may take years if at all.

So yes this statement "It takes longer to recover from lava" I totally agree with ~ its like comparing apples to oranges.

But I thnk we should keep this thread for "updates" on the lava flow and not other topics. I for one like having a specific thread where I can easily look up the current update. Thanks OpenD.

Here's a different view of the flow, a false-color thermal image map from the satellite based Advanced Land Imager, posted Monday on the HVO site, in the Photos section. See the text below for explanation. Follow the link at the bottom to see dramatic photos from the Civil Defense overflights.

Quote:
This satellite image was captured by the Advanced Land Imager instrument onboard NASA's Earth Observing 1 satellite. Although this is a false-color image, the color map has been chosen to mimic what the human eye would expect to see. Bright red pixels depict areas of very high temperatures, and show active lava. White areas are clouds. For reference compare the flow outline shown here in yellow to the large-scale flow field map provided in the "maps" link above. The grid shows coordinates in Universal Transverse Mercator, with a grid spacing of one kilometer (0.6 miles).

The flow front remains active. The satellite image shows that active lava at the flow front has advanced approximately 240 meters (790 ft) beyond the point where it was mapped on Friday, October 3 (yellow line). The flow front today was 1.8 km (1.1 miles) from Apaʻa St.

Civil Defense Alert for Wednesday Oct 8 - the flow continues to advance, but apparently not as fast as the last two days...

Quote:
Eruption Information Update For 10/8/14 At 8:00am.

This is an eruption and lava flow Information Update for Wednesday October 8th at 8:00am.

This morning’s assessment shows that the flow front continues to be active and has advanced approximately 85 yards since yesterday. The narrow flow front is moving along the tree line and the burning activity is producing a significant amount of smoke. Smoke conditions in the area were light to moderate with a light trade wind out of the northeast.

Current flow activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities and no evacuation is needed at this time. Area residents will be given adequate notice to safely evacuate should that be necessary.

The public is reminded that the flow is not visible and cannot be accessed from any public areas. Access to the Kaohe Homesteads subdivision will remain restricted to area residents only.

Due to the uncertainty of the flow and possible impact on the community, the State Department of Health has issued the following advisory:

Residents dependent on medical services, treatment, or supplies and who live in communities that may be cut off by the advancing lava flow to relocate outside the affected area to ensure continued access to necessary medical support. If the lava flow crosses Highway 130, medical services and supplies will be severely limited and emergency medical service response time may be significantly delayed.

With the unpredictable nature of the lava flow, residents and visitors are advised to listen to Hawaii County Civil Defense updates and advisories.

We would like to thank everyone for your patience and understanding and your cooperation and assistance is greatly appreciated.

FAA has imposed a "No Fly Zone" around the lava flow front, due to a large number of tourist flights... some locals have been reporting more than 100 a day passing overhead... interfering with more important activities by Civil Defense and USGS and HFD and other government entities.

Quote:
(Civil Defense Administrator Darryl) Oliveira said the county and state Civil Defense worked with the FAA last week to impose restrictions over the airspace above the flow in response to increased traffic that could pose a threat to people on the ground.

“We’ve been seeing a lot of congestion, a lot of activity, over the lava flow,” he said. “Multiple times we see fixed wing aircraft and helicopters in the same area.”

The restrictions, which went into effect Saturday and will tentatively last until Dec. 1, cover a radius of 2 nautical miles around the front of the flow, and restrict flight below 4,000 feet. Before the restrictions went into effect, aircraft could fly as low as 1,000 feet above populated areas.

Oliveira said Civil Defense officials “do understand and appreciate the historic nature” of the lava flow, but the restrictions were necessary to “get control back, and going forward allow us to work collaboratively.”

HVO Map for Wednesday, October 8, showing their current lava flow project for the next 10 days... the blue arrow, with the arrowhead on the projected front location at that point... and then a dotted line showing steepest descent path from there.

Civil Defense Alert for Thursday 10/9 - Only a 65 yard advance in the flow front since yesterday, but lots of smoke from burning trees and vegetation.

Eruption Information Update For 10/9/14 At 8:00am.

This is an eruption and lava flow Information Update for Thursday October 9th at 8:00am

This morning’s assessment shows that the flow front continues to be active and has advanced approximately 65 yards since yesterday. The narrow flow front is moving northeast along the tree line and may begin to enter areas of lighter vegetation. The burning activity is producing a significant amount of smoke and smoke conditions in the area were light to moderate with a light trade wind out of the northeast.

Current flow activity does not pose an immediate threat to area communities and no evacuation is needed at this time. Area residents will be given adequate notice to safely evacuate should that be necessary.

Smoke from the lava flow... alerts and photo

These two items were at the bottom of today's CD alert, under their map update. I thought they were worth bumping up the attention on, for those within the affected area...

Quote:
  • The American Lung Association has issued a warning of health effects from smoke. Please visit their website for more information http://www.lung.org/associations/state/hawaii/ or read the September 8, 2014 Press Release.
  • The State of Hawaii Department of Health advises residents downwind of the lava flow to take precautions against smoke. Please visit their website for more information http://health.hawaii.gov/or read the September 5, 2014 advisory.

This recent lava flow is upper left to center in this picture. Kaohe Homesteads is to the left, Pahoa is behind the photographer, and to the right... essentially in the direction the lava front is currently headed.

We stopped in Pahoa a couple of times this spring while on vacation on the Big Island. Cute little town, great bakery. Really enjoyed the whole loop from there to Kalapana to Kapaho and back.

Pretty amazing what this new flow has done compared to the Kahauale'a flow we saw from a helo tour six months ago. I know _everywhere_ on the flanks of Kilauea and Mauna Loa are subject to lava flows, but never imagined Pahoa would be under threat anytime soon. Good luck to everyone there -- and everyone in Puna, given what a big deal losing Hwy 130 would be.
