Also from Monday 11:30 flight, this HVO photo gives a good sense of the big picture as the lava flow approaches Pahoa Village Rd. It was about .3 mile from the road at that time, and advancing roughly 5 - 10 yards an hour. Houses in the path evacuated Monday. Go to the link for more photos and HD version of this one..

The reports don't answer that question, but this thermal image seems to show the lava flowing around the sides of something, that shows as a dark island in the photo. Look back at Post #263 - that map seems to show the lava going around the cemetery on both sides, but part may be covered and part of what is still uncovered looks like pasture.

One hearsay account of a couple of burglaries doesn't exactly constitute "looting."

The Star-Advertiser report as of 9 am Tuesday 10/27 - Houses in path have been evacuated, officials allowing residents to stay in area to watch what happens. Go to the link for a copyrighted AP news video.

Lava enters residential property, but homes still standing

Lava advanced about 90 yards since Monday morning, entering a private residential property, but Hawaii County Civil Defense officials are not reporting any damage to homes.

The flow is about 510 yards from Pahoa Village Road. It's advance is inconsistent, averaging about 5 yards per hour overnight. Hawaii Volcano Observatory scientists said the flow did not advance Monday afternoon.

Two houses and several outbuildings on a Pahoa anthurium farm lie directly in the lava's path. Beyond those structures, a half-dozen homes stand between the lava and Pahoa Village Road, which runs through the heart of town.
The lava was about 70 yards from the nearest home Monday night.

Hawaii County Civil Defense planned to allow those living in the path of a lava flow to watch the destruction of their homes. That accommodation is being made to "provide for a means of closure," Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira said Monday. "You can only imagine the frustration as well as ... despair they're going through."

The flow advanced about 275 yards from Sunday morning to Monday morning, moving northeast at about 10 to 15 yards per hour. At other times, the lava slowed to about 2 yards per hour or sped up to about 20 yards per hour, depending on topography, said Janet Babb, a spokeswoman for the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Teams of scientists from the observatory were walking alongside the flow day and night to provide updates, she said.

Officials closed part of Pahoa Village Road to everyone except residents as the flow front moves closer.

Those living downslope of the flow are under an evacuation advisory. Most residents have left, and Oliveira said he doesn't anticipate having to issue a mandatory evacuation order.
