Aloha all,

My aunt and uncle, who have been as good as a second set of parents to me, have a significant anniversary coming up. They live in Hilo, and both work very hard (they are teachers), and are very giving people. I would like to send them away on a nice weekend get away.

Now, my original thought was to send them to Lana'i for a weekend. They have both lived in HI since the early 1980's and never been to Lana'i, and I heard it's great for couples. However, getting there from Hilo is a B*TCH, and quite expensive, and it does not seem reasonable for just a simple weekend away.

The BI is big enough, can anyone recommend any good B&Bs? I would prefer if it's not in the greater Hilo area, since paying to stay just down the road doesn't seem quite right The more remote and "away," it feels, the better.

I know of a great vacation rental with a pool and wonderful ocean view. How do they feel about lava?

I'm prejudiced... I highly recommend the Kilauea Lodge and Restaurant in Volcano. It's a lodge and cottages from an earlier era, beautifly upgraded into elegant modern accomodations, with one of the two top gourmet restaurants in the area. It's an hour out of Hilo, which is far enough away to feel like you're away, yet not so far it's a burden.

I highly recommend the lilikoi margarita!

I've actually eaten there with them, but i'm not sure if they've ever stayed at the Kilauea Lodge. Thanks for the recommendation, could pair the B&B reservation with a restaurant gift certificate!

Yes, absolutely. I've been to the restaurant many times, and the guest accommodations are as nice as the restaurant. I'm partial, after a nice meal there, to taking a nightcap out to the gazebo before calling it an evening.

Now that the Volcano House Inn and Restaurant in the park has reopened after a long rehab there's another top quality competitor, and it's very nice too, and even more historic than the Kilauea Lodge, but the room rates are much higher. Restaurant prices are about the same.

Here are the two links, for comparison purposes.

With all of the drama going on now with the lava flow, how about sending them over to the Kona side? Sunny and warm, especially as Hilo falls into the annual rainy season and far removed from the lava.

We stayed recently at the Hilton Waikaloa, and kama'aina rates were $150 (plus taxes, etc). A really, really nice get-away!

We've also stayed at Paniola Greens in Waikaloa Village. Really nice condo complex and good kama'aina rates.

I'm looking more for the B&B vibe than a resort or big name hotel. I thought of sending them over to Kona, can anyone recommend any quaint places over there?
