This Hawaii article suggests outdoor cats live only 2-3 years.

"Of course, the most important reason to keep a cat in is for the animal's own safety. Cats like to go outside, but for their own good, they shouldn't be indulged. After all, young children might like to play outside unsupervised, but allowing them to do so is negligent. The same is true for allowing cats out.

Outside threats to cats are numerous and take their toll on cat's lives. According to Barbara L. Diamond's article "Bringing the Outdoors In" (Cat Fancy, April 1990), "While the average outdoor or indoor-outdoor cat lives two to three years, an indoor-only cat's average life span is 12 to 15 years or more." A look at just a few of the hazards facing outdoor cats explains why their lives can be so brief:

I know several people with pet cats - All are kept inside and seem quite happy/content and flea-free.

My mother had my father build a fully enclosed kennel with a cat door into the house for her kitties. It worked very well. I don't think my mother ever lost one of those kitties before it was at least 15 y/o. Of course, the climate was different than Hawaii's, with hot summers and very cold winters. Both of which were good for killing off parasites, fleas, etc. I wonder if that idea would work for some people whose cats love the chance to get outside when they can?

Harnesses hooked to leashes for time in the fenced yard, if this is beyond understanding maybe rethink the whole pet ownership idea altogether, Anywhere. Ugh.
