I have been strongly considering buying a lot on the Big Island. Then over time a few years, buy a Yurt before moving. My main concern is the area. I don't want to step on the locals toes. I don't have a ton of money so I will be looking out of the highly desirable areas. I am 52 and work with children with Autism and borderline diagnosis. The Big Island at this point seems to have the best opportunities. What areas should I avoid even looking?

You should avoid Kona, Hilo, and any subdivisions with CC&Rs. If you're on a budget, look in Puna or Kau. The population of Puna is much larger, so would have more work opportunity for your field. (This should be moved to Big Island forum.)

Locals don't care, they're not building on vacant lots in Puna. Or if they are, there's plenty of vacant lots to go around.

Yurts weren't really designed for a tropical environment, a lot of people not from around here seem to pick them as a knee-jerk "less expensive" alternative building method. Although you may want to crunch the numbers before coming up with that as a final answer. However, if you like them for being a yurt, that's different.
