Sad to see old landmarks go, but this was pretty far down there even in the 80's. Only place where a Bounty paper towel would have been thicker than the bath towels on the rack. But, for all the traveling locals who island hop to see family, it was a good place to leave your luggage and lay your head after spending all day on the beach with the ohana. All the islands have places like this that are more for locals than for touristas. I stayed there a time or two when the entire ohana descended on Hilo for a celebration of some sort or another. It was Uncle Billy's or cots crammed together on the mosquito lanai!

Wasn't there just something in the PBN this week about how much Bishop Estate owns on the Big Island? Can't find it now. Anyone else see that?

Statewide, the State of Hawaii is the largest land owner, followed by the US Government and then Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools. Bishop Estate owns 365,000 acres statewide.

81% of the US Government owned land is on the Big Island. 82% of the Bishop Estate/Kamehameha Schools land is on the Big Island, so I guess you could do the math.

Calling it new is misleading, it's the old Naniloa built in the '60's.

And it has the most thin walls of all! Heck you can hear the guy net door unzip his suitcase while you sit on the bed! I hope they put a sound barrier on them.

There has been major construction crews there for a long time. Gina's huli huli chicken (food truck) has been located across the street to service all the workers.

I heard it was mostly window dressing- new tile showers and furniture, etc. Kind of like Igor said in "Young Frankenstein" "Oh, a little paint, a few flowers, it'll be lovely"

You can put lipstick on a pig... but it's still a pig, as the saying goes.
