Was browsing Puna's facebook page, and came across this blog from Orbitz which names Puna one of "America's next treat gay meccas".

The Puna section reads:

"Puna, HI
We wouldn’t be the first ones to claim the *****-friendliness of this Big Island paradise nor the first to fall in love with it, but for certain Puna has captured our hearts. This crunchy, cool jungle district claims a mixture of artists, hippies, yogis, off-the-grid types and queers galore. Several gay B&Bs dot the landscape as does the LGBT-owned and operated Kalani eco-retreat. Although there are no gay bars to speak of, the teensy town of Pahoa boasts a mega-inclusive vibe and several great restaurants and dive bars. The gay community is a fixture at black sand nude beach (don’t miss Sundays!) and for adventures further afield there’s nearby Hilo and Volcanoes National Park."

Any local insight?

I don't know that I would call it a mecca, but yes, we're here.

Kind of a strange question (why would one care?) but the Aloha spirit means accepting people for who they are. This is the Aloha State.

Well when it is described as "mecca", just thought it sounds like something special...

Mecca is just a word that the blogger used. Doesn't mean that it is necessarily reality.

Interesting. Seems in conflict with all the racism threads and comments in the Hawaii forum.

Perhaps if it is true, you might be able to saving some money and skip building that big wall you wanted all around your property.

Love the video. If it is a good depiction of life in Puna I may consider moving there myself.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least to see the LGBT population of Puna soar. Considering the recent election results, if I were part of the LGBT community, black, Mexican or Muslim, I'd be heading to the hills and Puna is about as far away from things as possible. Was the Orbitz blog done before the election?
