What are you talking about? You said you were looking for a place and now it is in your "back yard"?

For a guy who doesn't live in Hawaii or own property here, I'm surprised at your level of concern with minutiae like a cell phone tower.

After your thread about the "Fern Forest Ice Head Warzone", are you still contemplating a move to this area?

Basically it works like this: A company like ATT will propose a new project. It gets pushback, a few things need changing on the permit. ATT moves ahead anyway. They submit their new proposed permit, more pushback, protests, and then the commission or whatever governing body, will ask for more study or an alteration. ATT already has the components, parts, and machines on the Island in anticipation. They resubmit, with a few minor and meaningless alterations. At this point the commission is "convinced" in one way or another, and in some undeveloped countries it is with bribes, and in developed countries it is with "lobbying". More protests ensue, but no one really cares. Then when an approval comes in, they probably already had the tower modularized, and just helicopter it in there. I would imagine a small project like this would only take as long as it takes the concrete to cure. This happens around the world with any large infrastructure corporation, be it cell towers, pipelines, or anything which can make the corporation millions. So you should never be surprised to see something like this pop up over night.

Nice rant.

But, a couple of points

1) There is no need to lobby or bribe local governments, HOA, or commissions. The federal rules regarding wireless service make it practically impossible for local jurisdictions to stop a cell tower. They can extract small concession like camouflaging it, reducing height a little bit, etc. But, they are very unlikely to be able to stop it. The carriers play along with local authorities mainly out of good will and public relations. At any point they could assert the federal laws and push forward with the project.

2) Forcing the carriers to spend more money to put the towers in the jungle and lava fields will have two affects: a) Coverage will be poorer, the sites are chosen to provide better coverage b) Higher costs passed along to customer bills, i assure you the corporation will not be paying the extra costs out of their "corporate millions" I am guessing you would be complaining about both of those impacts as well.

You sure that's a new one? I believe T mobile has an existing tower already in Paradise Park.

Even working on mainland China time a completed tower less than 2 weeks after approval would be smoking fast.

According to the article, the fire and police chief are anticipating a quicker response time for emergencies as a result of better phone service with the new ATT tower. That's not quite so optimistic as your interpretation of "dropping crime."

That was a figure of speech. Are you familiar with the term NIMBY? So now I wouldn't consider buying a lot with a cell phone tower in my backyard. Does it make more sense now?

Yes. Still looking, our first choice is a farm. Only reason we didn't buy in HPP 2 years ago was because the lots are only 1 acre in size.

In fact I'm not, this was sent to me by my agent. That is what I've been told, but it doesn't matter, if that's in HPP, I'm out. Does anyone on here even live in HPP? You've got some people from Maui, some people from elsewhere on the BI... And I'm getting called out for living elsewhere? LOL.

I wouldn't consider buying a lot with a rooster farm in my backyard, but there is nothing to stop somebody from buying the lot next to me and putting in a rooster farm later.

Or a cell tower. Because I live in a neighborhood with no CC&Rs. If you want to live in a neighborhood with an HOA of Karens dictating what everybody can or cannot do with their property, those are the subdivisions you should be limiting your search to.

Of course, one of the biggest of those is Leilani, and despite their efforts to call for a manager to remedy the situation, they couldn't stop Pele from destroying the neighborhood with lava.

The Puna Strip is like Vegas. You can play in the lava casino, the rooster casino, the cell tower casino, or in your case, the meth lab casino, some days you win, some days you lose. But every day, the house has the advantage. The people who make here "let it ride". The others go home broke.

There's not much soil in most of the big Puna subdivisions. Just because there's trees growing in leaf litter on top of lava, doesn't mean there's any soil below. So, depending on what type of 'farm' you want, check for soil.

There's not many tractor dealers, there's not a lot of affordable employees so factor those sorts of things into your farming plans as well.
