This wasn't some heart attack.....

"A tour guide died Thursday morning while on a guided hiking tour near a lava flow in the Kalapana lava viewing area, the Hawaii County Fire Department said.

Rain created a steam cloud that quickly surrounded the group of four people and affected their breathing and visibility along Kalapana Chain of Craters Road around 8 a.m., fire officials said.

The group was overcome by the noxious steam cloud on an open lava field, the fire department said. Three managed to escape to a safe area, but a fire helicopter crew found the guide unconscious.

Who would have thought a volcano was dangerous, or the ocean.

What was it, then? Doesn't look like cause of death has been disclosed.

From the article...

The guide succumbed to the noxious effects of the cloud, while the other three people escaped,”

Aka....not breathing enough oxygen....aka breathing in toxic volcanic gas.....probably tend to make someone have a bad time. Essentially a non-physical, asphyxiation.

Especially if he already had a lung or heart condition already before hand...

Right, but..."an autopsy is pending to determine cause of death."-from another story.

It's entirely possible he died from lack of oxygen, but quite uncommon. I find it somewhat odd that the others left him. Sounds like they encountered "hellish" conditions, for sure.

This happened at 4 AM, pitch black. The air became unbreathable. What would you do actually? Render first aid in a poison gas cloud or run like hell?
