Guess I should have been more specific, removed from the island.

Well, it seems pretty bad juju is happening to some of the residents of the Big Island who probably have never messed with any lava rock except to live on top of it.

Seriously though, how is this affecting the Kailua-Kona area? My wife has a relative who lives on a mountain slope above the coast there.

.
That saying has also been attributed to Chief Seattle, a Native American from the Duwamish tribe.

"How does lava covered property work?"

The problem in areas like Royal Gardens that was completely covered is that there is no legal access. Where the roadways were are indiscernible from the newly "paved" private property. The only way to access your property would be with GPS coordinates and a helicopter. Therefore the land is essentially worthless.

Thanks, I did not know that..

I saw a rustic sign in front of the Punahou beach Cottage in Kailua back in the 1980's and just assumed it was an old Hawai'ian saying.
Ironically, I heard, not sure, that Punahou sold that one acre lot that the ramshackle cottage was on to a Washington State developer for 5 million bucks last year...

Just keep in mind that with the lava, oceanfront today is bound to be inland after the next lava flow.

FEMA money paid to bulldoze the lava flow over the road and repave near the Pahoa transfer station after the 2014 flow. Granted it wasn't that high but I think the expensive part was the repaving. .
Info was shared with me from another forum that mayor Harry Kim says it will cost 5 million dollars a mile to redo the roads in lower Puna.

Who "owns" the new land produced by the lava flow into the ocean? The state?
