I've been here for a couple of months in Hilo and every day feels like I'm on vacation even though I have started to live like a local for a while now. I also found work on the hamakua coast and will be moving there soon.

How long did it take you to settle and feel at home here in the islands? I've met some people who said they never adjusted because Hawaii is touristy while others said it took them a couple of years.

Our family felt "home" relatively quickly.
5 years later, there's nowhere we'do rather be.

Thanks for the reply. I'm assuming you guys live in Ka'u base on your location?

How long it takes to feel settled really depends on you. Grassyknoll and I both joined a local volunteer organization that does great things in the community and brings locals and transplants together to work on various projects. Maybe for you, Windering7, it's the church you join or something else. It's all in how you go about meeting people doing things you enjoy.

Yep. Join some sort of group involved with (and preferably giving back to) the community, and you should have no shortage of new friends and ohana.

Although I’d recommend the poster keep his comments regarding Hilo as low class and ghetto to himself from the other thread. Usually doesn’t excite ones new friends.

Well, it's the truth. Hilo and Puna is ghetto. Lots of drug addicts live here. Lots of delusional people calling it simple living or paradise. There is a reason why it's cheap. It attracts the wrong crowds. You get what you pay for.

I'm sure my friend who teaches hula and creates lovely art work would be happy to find out that she's ghetto. Or my other friend who volunteers quite a bit at the HVNP in support of their forest restoration program. There are lots of people in both Hilo and Puna who are not "ghetto".

I agree with whiteviper -- lose the attitude.
