Hi,

We recently retired to Captain Cook in the South Kona area of the Big Island. I purchased a solar system, and since I was an Electrical Engineer before becoming disabled, I was planning to try to install it myself. The electric company explained that I can't do that and stay grid tied.

Now I need a licensed Electrician to create the drawings and assist in getting a permit.

If that's something you can help with, or if there's someone you can recommend, please send me a private message.

And if you have gone through this process and can share your experience, that would be much appreciated!

Mahalo!

Try SolarWorks down that way, they'd probably know someone.

Technically, you can't install it even if it isn't grid tied, all electrical work in the state has to be done by a licensed electrician, but there's a bit of slop factor in real life.

Can you transfer your degree to Hawaii and practice electrical engineering here? My solar guy uses someone on Maui since he can't find someone local.

I've got a pair of licensed electrical guys, but one is so busy he can barely breathe and the other is semi-retired. Either one won't go that far for a job, though, since you're on the other end of the island.

I know there are a few licensed electricians in the Oceanview area and they might not be quite as busy as the trades folks in town. There are a couple of Oceanview Facebook pages you can request to join where you can ask for recommendations.

Yes, the people on the HOVE groups are quite helpful.
