A friend told me that much of the fleet owned by the majors has recently been shipped back to the mainland, creating somewhat of a shortage. Therefore, rates are fairly high now. He paid over $100 for a one day rental a couple days ago.

Anyone else heard this? Not sure it's true...

It is true at all the leisure destinations. A quick look at Honolulu has cars going for $373 per day April 1-4 and none available at Kona airport.

Your friend was lucky to even get a car, from what I am hearing. This is a great opportunity for anyone wanting to rent their car out through a site like Turo (not advocating doing that, but it might work for some people).

A friend of mine was working on the Kona side last week and mentioned it was hard to find a hotel room. Spring Break.

$1,000 a day to rent a car? Low supply, surging demand are pushing up prices in Hawaii

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2021/0...prices-hawaii/

Rental cars are a hot commodity in Honolulu. If you can reserve one ― and that’s not guaranteed ― prepare to pay top dollar.

A spike in spring break travelers is causing a shortage of rental cars in a number of US vacation hotspots, including Honolulu. And that’s causing sky-high prices for vacationers.

Several travel websites on Monday showed very few rental cars available for Honolulu this week.

Vans were going for as much as $500 a day. Convertibles were renting for $1,000 or more.

On Maui, the cheapest rental is $722 each day for a Toyota Camry.

A couple who recently stayed in my building arrived in Maui to no available car even though they had a reservation. They were told that they would have to wait for a car to be turned in.

They ended up renting a 3-wheel motorcycle that looked like an old British sportscar.

How much did this fine motor vehicle set them back per day?
