Kind of painting with a broad brush there. Puna is a pretty big area (500 square. miles compared with 597 sq. miles for all of Oahu).
Within the Puna district, there are wonderful and perfectly safe areas and places I wouldn't go at night.
Just like Oahu.

I'm at the Big Island right now. I went to Fern Forest yesterday and today. I went in terrified but I made it out alive. I went all the way to the back (on the paved main road). I didn't dare go down the unpaved "Jungle King" ave. I was really surprised to see the person who lived at the very end of the subdivision (down the dirt road) had a newer BMW X5. After I made a U turn at the end of the paved road I went down Makoa road. As I was halfway down this road a man on an ATV appeared blasting down the other side of the road. I was TERRIFIED. He got closer, and he gave me a friendly wave. After that I turned around and left while I was still alive. I saw a lot of relatively expensive newer cars enter and leave the subdivision. I didn't go in here expecting to even drive to the back, maybe just one block then leave (I was truly scared) I went into Eden Roc afterwards (the poorest place in Puna, Fern Forest is second). I made it halfway down the road but I turned around because the quality of the roads got worse and there was a suspicious man walking slowly in the middle of the road. Eden Roc creeped me out quite a bit. Fern Forest was pretty free of litter, but Eden Roc was not. The road is that goes in there is DEEP. You could be killed there and no one would know. Have any of you ever been in there?

BTW, I came to the Big Island to check out land in Volcano and to "explore". I've had a wonderful time here this past 5 days. My favorite place is Laupapoehoe Point so far. The only "interesting" thing that happened was that a homeless man at a McDonalds in Keauu would not leave me alone until I took with me the rock he found on the street.

Eden Roc? Just once, over 20 years ago. A friend was buying some POS SUV there and he needed some help. Sketchy folks living in a funky house, they scolded us for not bringing any weed along to share with them.

I didn't like the area. Right now it'd be freakin' soggy wet and downright chilly.

You didn't really take the wizard's rock did you? It brings with it 7 generations of bad luck. You have to return it to him immediately.

I looked at a place in Eden Rock. I agree with the assessments posted here.
