For those of you who followed my threads (and thank you to everyone who provided support and advice), after hoping to move to my wife’s home state of Hawaii three times over the past 20 years, we ultimately decided that it wouldn’t be wise at our ages. She made two scouting trips last year. Oahu would have been our first choice, but it’s way out of our price range. We could have afforded Hilo, but not the kind of house we want. Many people warned us about the poor quality of healthcare on the Big Island. My company’s health insurance plan doesn’t extend to Hawaii, anyway, so I would have had to pay for my own. The expense and logistics of moving were more than we bargained for. Long story short: we just moved to Louisville, KY, where my wife’s older son moved to six years ago. We visited twice and love the area, it’s much cheaper than Portland (and much, much cheaper than Hawaii), it’s lush and green, people are friendly, and I lived in Atlanta for 25 years and am familiar with the South. We have friends and relatives in both Hilo and Honolulu, so we can visit any time.
Congratulations! Good choice. I've lived both in Hilo and in Louisville. The quality of life , for the income level., is much better in Kentucky, than Hilo. Kentucky's southern charm is very supportive and sophisticated. Another good reason is you have family there.
Enjoy your visits to Hawaii. Aloha!
I hadn't seen your other threads but happened to see this one.
My dream destination was different and was always a long shot, but I thought maybe I could swing it until certain "plot twists" took place. As time passed and health concerns arose (I work FT and have excellent benefits) I started thinking, probably better for me to stay where I am and visit when I can.
Enjoy your future visits to Hawaii, and congratulations on your recent move to Louisville.
Sorry that you were not able to make a Hawaii move work for you. Considering all that you wrote, however, I think you made the correct decision. Hope you enjoy Louisville (I have no doubts that you will ) and hopefully you'll continue to enjoy your visits to Hawaii
I lived on the Big Island for several years, until 2017. Wish I had never moved, but yet, here I am. I have resigned myself to the fact, at age 75, I will never make it back, even as a vacation. Such is life.
Enjoy Louisville, KY.
