I lived south of Hilo almost a decade by now, and I'm just starting to realize, I'm barely scratching the surface how unique this place is.
I think it would be more than entertaining to learn the outlandish stories some of the most colorful characters might have here, but... what's a good way to start about it?

One day I needed to get out of the office so I took an early lunch and took my brown bag to Reed's Bay. A happy drunk came to the table carrying a Valencia guitar and a can of malt liquor. We talked story briefly and then he serenaded me while playing the guitar including using it for percussion. He was actually really good! A little impaired, but I definitely had the impression he was used to performing. Afterwards he staggered off.
