Have you looked at the online versions of the newspaper? I doubt you will find a union plumbing job although perhaps some folks would want some truck or ATV racks built. Does your union talk to the local union here? Can they help? Can you stash your stuff and your dogs with someone on the mainland for three or four months while you come over first to get settled? If things don't work out, you'd save a lot of shipping costs since animals are expensive to relocate. Same with your furniture and "stuff". If you could put it in numbered boxes and keep an inventory of what's in each box then after you've moved over and gotten settled you'd be able to ask for the boxes you need to be shipped over. This assumes you've got some sort of family or other ground support on the mainland.

The hospitals are having a huge huhu lately with no funding and having to cut staff and such. You may be able to start an elder care place, but I don't know about what sort of laws and restrictions those have.

I agree with hotzcatz. I laughed when you said a place with some land. I am assuming they are medium to large dogs. This might also add to the cost of finding a place to live. I love animals myself and realize they are probably like part of your family, but 3 Dogs moving to Hawaii???
I work in the medical field and it does not pay well on the Islands compared to the mainland. Plus it is not easy getting jobs with hospitals now days on the Islands. Your wife might want to sign up with a nursing agency on the Island, or private duty or a geriatric facilities. Neptitism is not uncommon in that field a local would likely get the job before a RN from the mainland. However it never hurts to try.
