Isn't the electric rate per KWH right on the monthly bill?

Here in Central Illinois, ours is *cough* 11.5 cents per KWH! Can you believe the audacity of these electric companies? We only used 369 KWH for the month and the electric portion of the bill was $48 after taxes, credits, mysterious charges that no one understands, etc.

I am finding that getting a vacation rental for the first few months or so makes tremendous sense. No giant deposit up front. No first and last month's rent, up front. No credit or reference checks to bother with. No scrambling around to arrange electric service, satellite/cable TV, internet....

When looking for a vacation rental - it is supply and demand and right now there are a lot out there. This means that you need to CALL the property owner (not just email) and ask what the real rate will be. This way they know you are sincere. You will be offered discounts from the published rates.

There isn't an actual number on the bill...they tell you your useage and the total amount of your bill, but that includes these charges:

Customer Charge
Non-Fuel Energy
Base Fuel Energy
Interm Rate Adjustment
P&F Surcharge
Energy Cost Adjustment
IRP Cost Recovery

I don't even pretend to understand exactly what all these catagories are.

In any case, our average cost for last two months was approx. $.32 per KWH. (Last September, the avg was $.46, and then the rates started to fall again.)

I would imagine that since the power is nearly all provided by burning oil, that's what the various extra costs are for. When the price of oil goes up, so does your electric bill.

You could get a 2WD car that gets really good gas mileage and put a mountain bike rack on it to get you to the off road spots. The majority of your driving will be 2WD and the distances are such that good gas mileage is important. Having a truck that can go anywhere that you can't afford to put gas in is no fun.
