This is a bit out of left field.

Any mainlander who lived in the east may be familiar with harness racing and jogging horses in sulkys (carts)...I'm taking the USTA Driving Course this year and would love an opportunity to put those skills to work occasionally jogging horses on the BI. Does anyone know whether there might be such an opportunity? I know there's no racing (though there is a history of thoroughbred racing and there have been sporadic efforts to revive it) but jogging a horse in a jog cart around a track would suit me fine. Anyone ever hear of such a thing on the BI? Thanks!

I saw on google earth what looked like a large track of some sort somewhere around Mountain View, Volcano maybe? I can't recall exactly where though. It was fenced as if it were a horse track meaning that there was both inner and outer fencing around the oval.

I saw a horse and cart along the road several weeks ago but that was on an old cane road. Not a jogging horse cart sort of thing, more of a farm cart sort of thing.

There is a horse race track up in Waimea at Parker Ranch arena but we have a lot more rodeo arenas than race arenas. Perhaps some of the horse folks will know.

Horses? I think there are.

Maybe I'll check with Parker Ranch. Thanks all.

No such animal = harness racing / trotters.

Worth asking. Not expecting much but maybe a transplant with horses. Ya never know, right?

There is/was a team of big horses pulling a wagon at the Parker Ranch shopping center when tourism was booming, I haven't seen them lately but I don't get up to Waimea often. Lots of folks have riding horses and roping horses. The paniolo (cowboys) still use horses to move the cattle around. The dairy was using horses for a little while, I'm not sure if they are still using horses or if they went back to ATV's or a combination of the two. There are also several horseback tours and wagon tours around the Waipio Valley area and horseback riding up in the Kohala and Waimea areas.

I may try to work out owning one someday, but I've never owned a horse. I'm definitely planning some equestrian recreation when I relocate. Thanks, good info!
