Friend of ours went away for a 2 week Xmas vacation and my daughter got the job of feeding and watering the bird while the woman was away, well the kid goes over one day and the bird is dead on the bottom of the cage.
So i go over and put the bird in a freezer bag then put that in a manila envelope and put the bird in the freezer.
Well the bird has been in the freezer for more than half a year now and the owner doesnt want to deal with the issue as apparently its too emotional for her and my wife tells me not to bring the issue up.
How long is Politically correct to keep a dead Cockatoo in your refrigerators freezer before just tossing the darn thing?..

That is a cockatiel, not a cockatoo.

And your wife is right. Leave it alone.

Since it is not in your refrigerator, I don't think you should say anything.

Actually, you should be thankful she didn't suspect your daughter of killing the bird, take the bird for an autopsy, and send you the bill.

Is that what your friends would do given a similar scenario?

I would say just let her know that you're there for support when she is ready, and as long as she doesn't have a collection of pets in her freezer.

If it was a large floor type freezer it could stay there forever but as its in the freezer in our refrigerator the corpse is continually being knocked about and disrespected in numerous ways,
I just dont think leaving the remains of the bird in a freezer is showing the love and respect the deceased pet deserves.

It's always wise to take a deceased bird for an autopsy if you don't know the cause of death, to rule out disease. This would be especially true if you have more than one bird. You would also want to know if the bird asphyxiated because of a gas leak in your home.

As for suspicion, if a pet dies on a pet-sitter's watch, it is not unreasonable to wonder if the pet-sitter messed up somehow. Not saying that's what happened, but another reason for an autopsy would be to try to rule out something like rough handling or starvation/dehydration.

ETA: Why is it in your freezer? Did the death occur in your home?

Well chickens get freezer burns after 30 days if not stored right so I would think a cockatoo would also so I say toss it you because it's no longer good to eat.
