IF they are not wild caught - then no, keeping them in a cage is NOT cruel, as long as the cage is at least 30" to 36" wide.

Personally I take 2 30" wide cages and stick them together to make a 5' flight space. My finches seem happy enough in a 36" wide cage but the particular cage I use comes in 30" and 36" width and 2 of the 30" wide ones (stuck together to make a 5' flight path) are usually cheaper than one of the 36" wide cages anyway, or nearly as cheap at least, when they are on sale.

The problem is that pet stores sell those tiny cages that are like 12x12 and tell you that's all the cage they need. THAT is cruel. I have a finch who was kept by himself in one of those after being severely plucked. It took him MONTHS to learn to fly again and build his wing muscles back up. He used to terrify me, the way he would sort of THROW himself at the side of the cage and then try to climb up. That's not normal finch behavior by a long shot. For a long time, I kept extra perches slantwise in the cage so he could climb up from the bottom, and his little friend learned to sleep on the floor next to him because that is the only place he felt safe for the longest time.
