So I was looking out on the patio, and noticed a bit of disturbance going on in a bush. A large black bird flew into the bush, and was kinda poking around. However, there were smaller, brown birds in the bush and in the vicinity of the bush. One of the brown birds appeared to try to disrupt the black bird's poking around. The black bird flew out, and then flew back in and started poking around again, and the smaller brown birds appeared visibly distraught.

Out of nowhere, a large brown bird flies into the bush a high rate of speed (it was almost like a blur), and the black bird and large brown bird disappeared after a short fracas of some sort.

10 minutes later I see the large brown bird flying into nearby woods with what appeared to be the black bird in its talons.

The thing is, I don't think the brown bird is the same species as the smaller brown birds... they just didn't look the same. I was thinking maybe the big brown bird is a hawk.

Ugh... I need answers. lol!

How big was the big brown bird? Hawks are pretty big birds, but their cousins, falcons are a bit smaller.

Could be an American Kestrel, they are plentiful in NC, as are Merlins.

It wasn't as big as the "stereotypical" Hawk... but I did read that NC has a smaller hawk.

It was a while ago but I kept hearing what sounded like a "squeaky toy" near my house. It moved from the back to the side of my house after about 5-10 minutes. I got worried thinking some little kid or dog was loose so I went to investigate. It was an owl with a dove that was putting up a hell of a fight. I know it's nature but that dove was determined to live so I yelled and the owl took flight (into a nearby tree). The dove was fine. It was so strange because it was daytime.

Yes...not every hawk is big. A sharp-shinned hawk is possible, as they fly into woods/shrubs...larger hawks cannot do so due to wingspan.

You witnessed quite a show of nature!

You too got quite a show!

Watching predator/prey in nature is hard for me too.

I might would have intervened, too. But in my case, the initial predator got ambushed by a larger predator. It almost seemed life a microcosm of the world played out before my very eyes via wildlife.

I recently saw two young herons being chased by a bird of prey. They got away but I hate seeing that ****! My nieghbor told me he had a fish fall on his car the other day... lol. I live at the beach so I see a lot of prey with catches I really wish I could unsee!
