Does anyone know how long Shama Thrushes live? What is their life span in captivity? I have a 10 year old male I feed Insectivore food made by Mazuri Feeds. Also several mealworms each day. He is in good feather and sings his head off but he is starting to get old looking around the feet, if you know what I mean.
Lots of people in the US don't know what a Shama is but they are often bred and raised by Oriental people. They have gone wild in the Hawaiian Islands. Their song is like a cross between a Mockingbird and a Nightengale.
I've read some about shamas and seem to remember that their wild lifespan is around 7 years. However, a healthy captive bird could certainly live longer. IMHO 10 years is getting up there. Some of the smaller aviary birds I've had made it to 15. What about emailing some shama breeders and ask them? You should be able to contact a few through a bird marketplace such as softbills.com.

There used to be a Yahoo.com forum for softbills but it isn't very active. Might get faster answers by emailing the breeders. Or, find a softbills book. There have got to be web resources on shamas by now.

Hmm, I don't use Farcebook but was able to reach a "softbills.com" website up until last week. Now it seems to be gone. Don't know what happened. If the Yahoo.com softbill forum is still up you might ask there.

It is suprizing that Shama Thrushes are so little known in the United States. They become tame, the male's song is varied and enchanting, they are pretty and with long tails. Sure they are insectovores but they can easily be raised on Mazuri insectovore diet. They eagerly take mealworms and swatted flies from the hand.
