My wife and I are facing a possible relocation to the Birmingham area from metro Atlanta. We have family in the area, mostly in the eastern and northern metro B'ham parts. But my job would be at a community college in Childersburg, down 280. Can anyone help with ideas on where to live? Not sure about renting or buing yet. Possibly working at satellite campus in Talladega, but probably not for a while. Any ideas?

Your commute between Talladega and Childersburg will only be about 30 - 45 minutes, so either area would be good. Where will your spouse be working?

Perhaps it would be wise to rent until the uncertainties are cleared up.

BEST OF LUCK

A LOT really depends on what kind of amenities you want. If you want better shopping and restaurants and entertainment venues, then I would really suggest that the Chelsea/Greystone area of 280 will give you the best alternatives. At least there, you can be relatively close to the city, while still having a short commute to the workplace. Best of all, it will be against traffic.

Yeah, Chelsea was one of the areas I was thinking of, but don't know much about it. I remember I was there once, about 5 years ago, and don't know much since. I was also excited about it being the opposite direction of 280 traffic. We do want to stay close enough to things in the city like shopping, entertainment, dining, etc, but far enough out to feel like there is a little space. Dare I say "country". We couldn't afford more than 250k for a house, so I don't know what that says for us area-wise, either. Any other suggestions?

Too many foreclosures in Chelsea for my comfort level. 250k will get you a nice 3 BR on 41/Greystone Farms - you are close to everything, have Shelby County taxes and several road options.

There are foreclosures everywhere, the main item is schools for kids, and long term housing appreciation...

Chelsea isnt any worse than other cities.. you cant really go wrong on this side of town especially if your commute is against the normal traffic pattern...
