I'm relocating to the Birmingham area soon and need some ideas on apartments. I've checked out the apartmentguide.com and apartmentfinder.com, as well as apartmentreviews.com, but can't find much info on what the complexes/areas are actually like. Can anyone tell me what maybe the top 5-10 complexes or areas are? I can sort out price later; my wife and I just want something clean, in a low crime area, with a relatively quiet complex. We're also looking more in the South and East sides of Birmingham and suburbs, but haven't ruled out places like Trussville/Pinson either. (Say from Trussville to Moody and a semi-circle all the way around to Valleydale Rd in Hoover.) Any fellow apartment dwellers have opinions?

Try selectmyspace.com. They have apartments/duplexes for several places in Southside/Highland Park/Forest Park areas, as well as covering other parts of Birmingham (Downtown/Avondale). They also list places in Homewood and Mountain Brook.

If you are looking in the city, many places in Birmingham's nicer old neighborhoods are not listed well online or may not be online at all. They hide in the foothills and up the side of Red Mountain. I suggest no matter what community you choose, try to plan a trip to Birmingham prior to your decision and drive around.

Pinson will not have that many apartments. Look for houses to rent if you like that area. They start around $1000 a month. Pinson is quiet, and not as far from downtown as many people think.
Trussville will have more apartment complexes and houses to rent. Both areas have pretty low crime.

Check out Cityville Apartments. They are located in the heart of the UAB district, and are brand new. This is a really up and coming area, and you will save a ton, because you could bike or walk to classes. You should also research Red Mountain Villas. They are close to UAB. The Five Points South and Southside areas are are just full of college students. Good luck! I hope you will choose to live inside the Bham city limits!

Did I miss something here? Is there supposed to be a casino at some apartment complex, or was that posting a mistake?

Yes-- you are headed in the right direction-- there are multiple rental agencies out there, but in my experience it has been a better bet going to the actual apartments. Vast majority of the online listings are not available, you are dealing with someone who was hired yesterday etc. etc...

Typically I suggest using rental websites as a guide- then talk to the properties yourself.

If you choose to go the rental agency route here are a few others:

Birmingham AL Apartments | Rental Apartment Finders | Space Hunters

Birmingham apartments - Alabama apartments - Apartment Locators

Birmingham Apartments Al Hoover Apartments assistance by Apartments Avenue. Apartment Finding

Here are some of the top apartments in Birmingham currently:

Downtown-

CiTYViLLE Block 121

Ross Bridge/ Hoover Area

Birchall at Ross Bridge and Cityville Block 121 are the best in the city. If you look anywhere else, you are pretty much wasting your time.
