We will be moving to Birmingham this summer and we are trying to decide about the high schools. We are down to Oak Mountain High Sch., Vestavia High School, Spain Park or Homewood High Sch. Academic rating is very important for us when is comes to choose a sch. If our son is not into sports or band will he be able to fit it? He is more of a outdoor adventure type. He went to private schools out of State for most of his life and now we are moving back, him fitting in to school is very important for us. Please can we have some feed backs to help us to learn more between those schools. Thank you for all your replies and suggestions.

Hoover is a very large school, with class sizes 600+. My stepson (shy, artist type) came here from a small rural school and was miserable at Hoover. He then went to Oak Mountain and was much happier there, although it still seemed "big" to him. Spain Park is the "smaller" high school in the Hoover system. Vestavia has a bit of a snob factor, second only to Mt. Brook. Homewood would be the smallest (I think, but check me on that) and has some diversity to it. But as far as house shopping goes, you don't get as much for your buck in Homewood as you do in Hoover or in uninc. Shelby County (Oak Mountain High).

Have you considered some of the fine provate school in the area? Indian Springs is top-tier for college prep, and Altamont is fine as well. Briarwood Christian and John Carroll (Catholic) also have good reputations.

Default Thank you

Thank you so much for your reply so quickly. All the information's you gave us about the schools are the ones I did found out about them while I was searching. Oak mountain is very disciplined they say which is okay with us, but I cannot believe it was bigger then Spain and Vestavia. We are going towards to Oak Mountain for some reason, maybe because when we leaved in B'ham many years ago, that was the school my son was going to go in the future. About housing, we have to decide on school first to look into neighbourhoods. Growing up in International life makes us little bit worry about him not fitting in. Is it better to be in bigger school so he can have more options, or smaller is better so teachers- student ratio will be higher? Or maybe I am just worrying to much. I am glad we have until summer to search and get more information. Thank you again.
