Basically I need help selecting an apartment. I have looked at several online, but unsure of the area. Safety is my first concern. Please comment on the list below. Thanks !

Sycamore Manor 1248 22nd St. South
Virginian Court 1027 30th St
Jefferson 1430 33rd St.
Carlisle Terrace 1225 29th St. S.

Any additional information would be helpful.

Hi. All are in perfectly safe areas (Within reason, of course. One should always use common sense in an urban area). I think Sycamore Manor, while very close to some great restaurants, grocery, etc., is on a pretty busy street right off the expressway, which might affect your quality of life somewhat. The other three are in a tightly defined neighborhood on the other end of Highland Avenue. Based on sheer location and not knowing what the interiors of these places are like, I'd vote for Virginian Court and Carlisle Terrace as my two picks. Obviously, use your own instinct and tastes when choosing. Good luck! I loved living in that area of town.

Thank you for the information. I am not set on one particular area. I am looking for a nice 1br/studio apartment in a safe area. Convenient to UAB/1701 University Blvd area. I really want an area I feel safe enough to run and walk my dog. There are so many apartment listings it's becoming very overwhelming. I would also appreciate any info from grad students who have moved into the area recently. Thanks again.

The two apartments I named in particular are in a primo dog-walking area, namely Highland Avenue, which has three parks one after another.

I was wondering if anyone has any recent first hand knowledge of Carlisle Terrace or The Phares (the building/surrounding area). Also wondering if any newly accepted UAB grad students can offer any suggestions about any rentals they have recently looked at in the Highland Park area. Good, bad, or otherwise. I need to sign a lease quicky. It seems everytime I get close to making a decision I receive negative feedback regarding the building or area. For example not to live directly of Highland Ave., don't live too close to the parks............??? Anything you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks!!!

Who the heck told you not to live off Highland Avenue? They're smoking crack. It's a great neighborhood, very convenient, and a good place to live.

Oh. I don't see why not. It's not noisy. But the apartments that are a block off Highland should be fine.

I agree, living right on Highland is great. Living a block off should also be good.

Absolutely. The nanosecond our last child has a diploma from Mountain Brook High, the For Sale sign goes into the front yard and we're moving right back down there. I'm thinking one of the high rises, seeing as I hate yard work. MrsCPG might have other ideas, however.
