I agree with CPG. 35216 (Vestavia/older Hoover) and 35226 (mostly Hoover) will be good areas. Also consider 35244, which is the southwestern part of Hoover and has some of the newer construction -- but it also has some unincorporated Shelby County in there, too.

There's a comedy club in Hoover, movies o'plenty, lots of shopping, etc. etc. There really is a lot to do here.

There are also comedians that perform in places downtown, such as coffee shops.

City council meetings are good, too.

We too also moved from Southern California, but we moved to Huntsville area instead. Hoover is a nice area with haas shopping & restaurants. In fact, we occassionally make that 90 minute drive to Hoover to eat & shop. I think you will find the transition is really not that bad, unless you enjoy living in "concrete jungles" like downtown LA,or Beverly/Wilshire areas. Think of Hoover as a more pleasant part of Orange County

@HB2HSBV, Thanks for the information. I am a little more at easy knowing that Birmingham is like Orange County. I am going to miss California weather.
