But it gets down into the 10s (teens) every year, even single digits are not THAT uncommon. I've never seen it get below zero in Birmingham, though.

With that being said, you will need a coat in Birmingham during the winter. 54 seems a bit misleading, I seem to remember a typical winter day in Birmingham being overcast with a high in the 40s, maybe some sleet or snow during the nighttime hours but nothing serious. Cold rain if anything is most likely. Birmingham's winter weather is kind of ****ty but hey at least it doesn't snow often.

With that being said, don't even consider Montgomery or Dothan. Just move to Birmingham, find a quiet neighborhood somewhere in the metro area so you can be convenient to all that the city of Birmingham offers.

Hmmm, I know I don't have a lot of Birmingham winters under my belt but I have found them to be quite mild which was part of my decision to move here. I do NOT like cold...at ALL.
It doesn't seem to get really cold (really cold to me = 30) in the daytime until late Dec. and I don't recall the temps really ever falling below freezing. There were plenty of 60 degree days through last winter, I remember because I was so suprised.
